Actually buses are that good in many cities in Thailand, apart from Bangkok and Chiang Mai, you may struggle finding frequent buses, most go long distances, not around cities. Its not like India. As Simon says, some places are good for hiring bikes but some are not.

Yes, the tyres of the one I tested were filled with air, but you will feel any uneven surfaces like cobbled stones. And Bangkok has plenty of uneven surfaces and potholes.
